Special Correspondents, a new original feature film written and directed by Ricky Gervais and starring Eric Bana (Deliver Us From Evil, Lone Survivor) and Gervais (Muppets Most Wanted, “Derek”), will debut worldwide on Netflix next year.

With Special Correspondents Gervais has written a modern comedy in which Bana plays a struggling New York based radio journalist, whose arrogance and decadent lifestyle has hindered his career. With his job on the line he fakes front line war reports from the comfort of his hideout above a Spanish restaurant in the heart of Manhattan.

“’Special Correspondents’ is classic Ricky Gervais; smart social satire with heart,” said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos.

“It’s the kind of great grown-up comedy that studios rarely make anymore, one that’s perfect for Netflix members around the world,” Gervais said. “Having shaken up the TV industry, Netflix is about to do the same to Hollywood. It’s great to be part of the changing future. Ted Sarandos is the new Godfather of entertainment and he made me an offer I couldn’t refuse.”

The film is a co-production between Bron Studios and Unanimous Entertainment. Ricky Gervais, Unanimous’ Chris Coen, Bron’s Aaron L. Gilbert, Manuel Munz and Larry Sanitsky will produce.

Creator and star of “The Office,” “Extras,” and “Derek,” Gervais has won three Golden Globes, two primetime Emmys and seven BAFTAS. “The Office” is the most successful British comedy of all time, shown in more than 90 countries with seven remakes. Considered the most influential British comedian since Charlie Chaplin, Gervais is an award winning stand-up, has hosted the Golden Globes three times and has written, directed and acted in the films Cemetery Junction and The Invention of Lying.

Eric Bana is one of Australia’s best known actors and began his career as a comedian in the sketch comedy series “Full Frontal” before winning critical acclaim in the biographical crime film Chopper. Since then, Bana has starred in such films as Munich, Black Hawk Down, Hulk, The Time Traveler’s Wife, Hanna, and Star Trek. He has received Australia’s highest film and TV awards for his performances and will next be seen in director Jim Sheridan’s The Secret Scripture, Guy Ritchie’s Knights of the Round Table: King Arthur and The Finest Hours.

Although credited as an “original comedy,” when Special Correspondents was announced in the trades last October it was listed as a remake of director Frédéric Auburtin’s 2009 French comedy Special Correspondents (Envoyés Très Spéciaux).

Narrator of Stop Laughing, This Is Serious (ABC1, 9pm), Eric Bana, begins the show by saying, “We Aussies love our comedy”, a reasonably uncontroversial statement, if one that leads a viewer to wonder whether this is a unique national trait, or people in other countries might quite enjoy a bit of comedy too.

Bana follows this up with “Today, it’s up there with the best in the world”, a slightly more contestable claim. But yes, the story of Australian comedy is a long and sometimes amusing one, classic moments nestling snugly up against horrible cringes decade after decade.

This show attempts to chart that story, happily dredging up plenty of great memories for comedy fans, capturing the thoughts of some of the country’s most-feted comedians, and occasionally exaggerating how much difference a joke can make.

The first episode, titled “Faark, faark” looks at the comedy of rebellion. The topic of political comedy brings out the usual suspects: Norman Gunston on the Parliament steps for the Dismissal, which is one of the more extraordinary moments in entertainment history; and the Chaser’s legendary security breach at APEC in 2007, a classic case of satire, in the words of Andrew Denton “showing that the balloon can be pricked”. Eric Bana is set to play Uther, the father of King Arthur, in Guy Ritchie’s “Knights of the Round Table” for Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow.

Charlie Hunnam will play Arthur, with Astrid Berges-Frisbey playing Guinevere. Jude Law is also in talks for the role of the villain.

Ritchie will direct with a script from Joby Harold. Ritchie and Harold are also producing along with Lionel Wigram, Akiva Goldsman and Tory Tunnell.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, though the pic is set to open on July 22, 2016. Niija Kuykendall and Cate Adams are overseeing for the studio.

The studio hopes the film can kick-start another franchise for Warner Bros., with the story to be told over six installments.

For Bana, the role isn’t the biggest, but the studio and Ritchie were always looking for a big name for the part to make a splash for the time he is onscreen, originally going to Liam Neeson before circling back with Bana.

Bana, who is repped by WME, recently wrapped production on Disney’s “The Finest Hours” and is also attached to star in the spy action comedy “Special Correspondents,” which has Ricky Gervais writing and directing as well as Jim Sheridan’s “The Secret Scripture.”
